President U Htin Kyaw, Japanese PM hold talks President U Htin Kyaw and Japanese Prime Minister Mr. Shinzo Abe held a meeting yesterday in Tokyo, with Japan’s support for the efforts of the Myanmar government and State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s plans for improvement of Maungtaw in Rakhine State discussed. Before the meeting, President U Htin Kyaw received a ceremonial welcome at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tokyo. At the meeting, the Japanese government affirmed its fresh support of 800 billion yen for Myanmar’s infrastructure development. “With 800 billion yen supported by Japanese government, Myanmar would promote the development of Yangon, basic infrastructure, transport and electricity sector in the city,” said President U Htin Kyaw at the press conference held following the meeting.

The two leaders also discussed promoting bilateral economic cooperation and matters related with Japan’s assistance in development of economy and human resources of Myanmar and in peace making process. President U Htin Kyaw expressed his thanks to Japanese government for its assistance in Myanmar’s socio-economic development and for its important role in the democratic transition in Myanmar. Hailing Mr. Abe’s announcement, President U Htin Kyaw said, “Japan is an important friendly country in the history of Myanmar’s democratization.” Prime Minister Mr. Abe reaffirmed Japan’s stance to support Myanmar’s democratic transition, reforms and peace process. Mr. Abe vowed to cooperate in building infrastructure in the state such as constructing roads and schools and electrification financed by Japanese loans and grant aid which Tokyo already announced it would provide to Myanmar.—MNA
